The Lilypad

What is it?
There are very few urban design solutions that address housing the inevitable tide of displaced people that could arise as oceans swell under global warming. Certainly none are as spectacular as this one. The Lilypad, by Vincent Callebaut, is a concept for a completely self-sufficient floating city intended to provide shelter for future climate change refugees.

Why it is cool?
The project isn’t even close to happening anytime soon, but there is value in future forward designs like the Lilypad. They inspire creative solutions, which at some point, may actually provide a real solution to the climate change problem.

Walk on water

What is it?
A water ball, also known as a walk-on-water ball or an AquaSphere is a large inflatable sphere that allows a human occupant to 'walk on water.' The water ball dates back to at least 1985, when it was used in the Beach Boys music video. The water ball is similar to a Zorb, but it has only one layer / skin and is designed for water travel rather than down-hill rolling

Why it is cool?
The desire to walk on water like Jesus is achieved and of course it looks cool!

Sleeping in a wine barrel

What is it?
Waking up in a Swiss Wine Cask of more than 14,500 liters. LA Times says this sleep experience is one of the most bizarre and unusual experiences in the world.

Why it is cool?
It is special because the cask is taken out of context. Usually there is wine in the barrel, now it's you!
How fun is it to say that you have slept in a wine barrel..

Dining in the Dark

What is it?
After Paris, Berlin and London has now opened new restaurant in Amsterdam where you can dine in the dark.


Why is it cool?
A daily activity like eating is an adventure when you turn of the light. It stimulates your senses. Sound, taste and smell become more important.

Lipbalmlabz

What is it?
At www.lipbalmlabz.com you can create your own lipbalm. You can personalize your lipbalm by creating a taste sensation and add a color. Also you can personalize the packaging. There is a lipbalm club en they organize parties and events.

Why it is cool?
It's personal, you create your own product. You're the designer of your product, so you're involved with the brand!

Shoot the lights

What is it?
At Tokyo Designers Week 2010 Jack Chang and Joshn Cheng came up with a happy-trigger concept to turn out the lights called the ‘Bang Lamp’ by bitplay Inc.

Why is it cool?
This lamp needs to be shot at to turn the lights off. In addition to aiming a toy gun at it the lampshade also knocks off to an angle showing that its been hit. Firing it once more turns it back on.
